Sparkfest is back! SWOVA and the Pass it On program are producing their annual benefit concert event on Thursday May 9th in the Orchard Room at Harbour House. Following last year’s inspiring show highlighting female performers sharing their art and stories to inspire and connect all of us, this year’s benefit runs on a similar theme. There will be a gala type concert as well as a silent auction, mocktail bar and dessert menu.

This year’s lineup will feature two amazing women musicians from Vancouver. Kinnie Starr is a 20 year veteran of the music scene in Vancouver having performed around the world, at festivals and even did a stint with Cirque Du Soliel. She wears many hats as a singer, hip hop performer and emcee, poet, actress, artist, seeker. She will bring her evocative music, which will be a mix of hip hop, folk and spoken word, all featuring her passionate, bold and truthful sound.

T. Nile grew up on Galiano and still retreats there when not on tour or making music in Vancouver. She’s a beautiful banjo and guitar playing singer who writes beautiful songs and garners much critical acclaim as a young folk/pop artist.

Other local performers will include Julia Beatty, Naomi Jason and her Advanced Dancers, poetry by Cat Paquette, as well as yoga and inspiration from Shannon Cowan. Last year’s event was a huge success and was a moving inspirational experience for the audience and performers who share their experiences of being mentored by women in their life as well as pass on some tidbits from their experiences.

The Pass it On program is a girls mentorship group providing young women from grades 10-12 weekly meetings to connect and share with each other and a facilitator. That group then facilitates mentorship between them and grade 8 girls.

SWOVA (Salt spring Women Opposed to Violence and Abuse) is a non-profit organization.

Tickets are $20 and are available at Salt Spring Books, McPhillips Ave, Ganges or at the SWOVA office 344 Lower Ganges Road (between Dagwoods and Golden Island) 250-537-2020 and from the Pass It On participants.
